Questions
Popcorn Ceiling Removal & Ceiling Painting: Common Questions
Does my popcorn ceiling have asbestos?
You cannot tell by looking. Texture applied before the 1980s may contain it, so a trained professional takes a sample for a laboratory before anyone scrapes the ceiling, and the work waits for the result.
Who does the asbestos test?
A trained and accredited asbestos professional, such as a Cal/OSHA Certified Asbestos Consultant, takes the sample and sends it to a lab. We coordinate the visit and schedule the removal around the report.
What happens if the test comes back positive?
The ceiling goes to a registered asbestos abatement contractor for removal and we do not scrape it. After that work is complete and cleared, we come back to skim coat, prime and paint the ceiling.
Will the rest of my house get dusty?
It should not. The room is sealed at the doorways and vents, floors and walls are covered in plastic, the texture is misted before scraping, and each room is cleaned before the next is opened.
Do I need a skim coat, or can you just paint after scraping?
Almost every scraped ceiling needs a skim coat to look smooth, because scraping leaves marks and exposes old seams and patches. If you would rather keep some texture, a light knockdown is the alternative.
Can you paint over popcorn instead of removing it?
Untested texture that is in good condition can be painted, but rolling it can loosen the texture and it never becomes a smooth ceiling. If smooth is the goal, removal is the way there.
Do I need to leave the house during removal?
Usually not, because the work is done one sealed room at a time. Anyone sensitive to dust may prefer to be out on the day a main room is scraped.
How much does popcorn ceiling removal cost in Torrance?
It is typically estimated at roughly $300 to $3,000 depending on the ceiling area and the finish, before any abatement, and the written quote after the walk sets the final price.
